I’m toth, and this is my second season of RD2L. Most of you reading either don’t know who I am, or have dismissed me in pre-match scouting as some shitter legend support. I haven’t been in this league long, but I already find the blogboys content to be my most anticipated aspect of RD2L… even though it probably shouldn’t be. Unfortunately… said content is somewhat too sparse for my ravenous appetite. Which led me to thinking: I should post some!

With that being said, I am only some shitter legend (headed back to archon) support, so I made something that takes my personal thoughts and opinions out of the equation. I hope you all find it interesting!

The Elo Ranking

Before we get to the ranks themselves, I need to post some other things first… But if you only care about those and just blindly trust me feel free to skip the following!

Methodology

I (and fspoon but I’ll get to him in a second) created a program to get these rankings. You can download it here if you wish. It calculates a team’s ranking (everyone starts at 1200) by taking a game and gives or takes points from those teams based on the winner/loser and their rankings. For example, Monkagolians(UltraGunner) would gain many more points by defeating BreakfastTacos (StonedSpirit) than they would for defeating RespectAllWomen (Sugoi-Chan).

I manually inputted results from all the games so far… omitting only games that were FF and byes (as this would skew the rankings). Because of this some teams have had less games than others. Which is a problem, mostly due to the fact that we have a small sample size so far. 10 games is where the Elo system can somewhat start functioning, but it gets better with more results.

The Elo system is not perfect. Far from it. There are a few more flaws (among many others) you can see from the rankings themselves:

a) Anyone with 0 losses (looking at you Itachi team) gets somewhat over ranked in the system, even if they are a cut above the rest.

b) Small sample size: I know I already mentioned this but it makes these rankings worse than they should be.

c) It only looks at wins and losses… things like net worth/xp advantage, draft strength, time of victory etc.. are all out of the equation.

One last thing before the rankings: I need to thank and credit fspoon for his major help in this endeavor. He did a lot of the harder work on the program… like setting up the Elo algorithm and some other things I was struggling with. Most of the credit should go to him. I just did the grunt work.
